Dave Clements: Rodeo photographer, Rett crusader

chronicle - Raising a Hand

By Claudia Feldman of the Houston Chronicle

For the month of March, freelance photographer Dave Clements roams the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. He appears, cameras in hand, at almost all scheduled events, including the first two songs of every concert, bucking broncs and steer wrestling.

This is the second career, more or less, for the silver-haired Clements. Before he started at the rodeo almost 10 years ago, he served as a human resources manager at ExxonMobil.

“I worked for them for 33 years, and they treated me well,” Clements said. “But I thought there was more to life.”

When he retired that first time, he had no idea he’d develop a photography business or throw himself into the fight against Rett syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects girls’ brain development. Symptoms surface after 6 months of age, and over time, Rett children have increasing problems with movement, coordination and communication.
